Season Rules — AFL 2026 Game 2

Rounds 5–16 · 20 players

Sportfolio is a fantasy sports game where players 'buy and sell' pro sports teams based on their potential movement on the league ladder. The aim is to build the biggest total portfolio by the end of the final round of the game. This private trial is based on the current AFL season. Here's how it works.

GETTING STARTED

1.Each player starts with $10,000 to invest.

2.Share prices are based on each team's ladder position — 1st costs $5.05, 18th costs $1.00. Each position is 10% apart.

3.Prices, portfolio values and game rankings update automatically approx 5 minutes after each AFL game is completed as the AFL ladder is updated.

TRADING WINDOWS & LOCKOUT

4.Trading windows open after each AFL round when the game admin moves the game from lockout to an open trading window.

5.During the trading window, you can only see your own live portfolio. All other players' portfolios show a snapshot from the end of the previous round.

6.Once the deadline passes — usually 30 minutes before the first game of the round — the game moves into lockout mode. No further trading is permitted for that round, and all portfolios are revealed.

7.You can undo any trade made during the current trading window up until the deadline — shares and fees are fully reversed.

THE SEASON

8.The season runs for 12 rounds: AFL Rounds 5 through 16. The player with the largest portfolio value wins. A special yet to be determined prize will go to the winner.

PORTFOLIO LIMITS

9.You can invest up to 25% of your current total portfolio value in a single trade — but you can buy the same team again in a future round.

10.You can only hold 50% of your total portfolio value in cash at any one time.

HOLD PERIODS

11.Each individual purchase must be held for a minimum of 2 rounds before selling.

BROKERAGE

12.Each trade incurs a brokerage fee as a percentage of your current portfolio value, doubling for each trade within that same trading window. Your first trade costs 0.5%, second costs 1.0%, third costs 2.0% and so on.

INTEREST & TAX

13.Top 4 teams on the AFL ladder pay weekly interest as follows: 1st: 2%, 2nd: 1.5%, 3rd: 1%, 4th: 0.5%. This is because they are less able to increase in value by rising in ladder position. Players must decide if it's still worth holding these teams, or selling and buying other teams that have the ability to make bigger gains in price.

14.Interest only applies if the team has been in the top 4 of the ladder for consecutive weeks.

15.The team in last position loses 1% of its value each week that it stays in that position. This is to prevent players from using this team as a place to stockpile cash.

Standings

🔧 Maintenance Mode (superadmin only)

Pauses all trade submissions for all players and shows a maintenance banner across the site. Portfolio viewing, leaderboard, market and research pages remain accessible.

Reset Price Baseline (superadmin only)

Fetches the previous completed AFL round's standings from Squiggle and sets them as the price-change baseline. Use when ▲/▼ arrows are showing changes from the wrong round.

Clear Price Change Indicators (superadmin only)

Removes the ▲/▼ price change arrows from the Market page by clearing the previous ladder baseline. Use at the start of a new competition.

🔧 Recalculate Cash (superadmin only)

Recalculates every player's cash from their trade log (replaying buys and sells from $10k). Fixes any cash inflation caused by out-of-order trade undos. Holdings are not affected.

🔧 Recalculate Brokerage (superadmin only)

Replays each player's current-round trades in order, recomputes the brokerage fee at the correct rate, and refunds any overcharge to their cash. Fixes inflated fees caused by trade/undo race conditions.

⚠️ Reset All Portfolios (superadmin only)

Wipes all holdings, cash and trade logs back to the starting $10,000 state. Use only when needed — cannot be undone.

🔀 Merge Duplicate Trades (superadmin only)

Collapses multiple same-team buys from the current round into one entry per team, then recalculates brokerage for the reduced trade count.
